Cyprus Aydın University English Preparatory School aims to be a pioneering educational institution designed to international standards, integrating educational technologies at the highest level, equipping students with the language skills they will need in their academic and professional lives, encouraging intercultural interaction, and contributing to the development of foreign language teaching.
Mission
Cyprus Aydın University English Preparatory School aims to enable students to express themselves effectively in English both verbally and in writing, develop their critical thinking skills, maintain a desire for continuous learning in individual and group work, and utilize information technologies at the highest level. To this end, it delivers carefully designed academic English programs, integrates educational technologies into the learning process, offers personal and professional development opportunities to its staff, and contributes to the advancement of foreign language teaching at both national and international levels.
English Preparatory School Education System
At the English Preparatory School, a course system ranging from beginner to advanced levels is implemented for associate degree, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree students for one academic year. It consists of four terms, each lasting 8 weeks, called “tracks.” At the end of each track, a track-end assessment exam (Level Exam) is administered. There is a break between the 2nd and 3rd tracks. Students at the English Preparatory School take 20 hours of classes per week.
Course Content
- Main Course:
It consists of a curriculum composed of grammar and vocabulary content. - Integrated Skills:
It consists of courses covering the four basic language skills.
LISTENING and SPEAKING: It includes English listening and speaking skills.
READING: It includes the skills of understanding what you read in an English text, analyzing it, gaining knowledge from what you read, and drawing conclusions from the text you read.
WRITING: It includes the skills of introducing oneself in English, presenting ideas on a topic, and writing academic compositions.
Evaluation System
The assessment system at the English Preparatory School consists of the following stages:
1st Stage
Each track (8-week periods) has a weight of 25%.
The average of 25% of the grade received by the student in each track is calculated.
The average of 25% of the tracks is calculated, and then the average of 70% of the total is calculated.
Example:
TRACK | The grade the student received | 25% average |
---|---|---|
Track 1 | 70 | 17.5 |
Track 2 | 75 | 18.75 |
Track 3 | 80 | 20 |
Track 4 | 85 | 21.25 |
TOTAL SCORE 77.5 |
70% of the Total Score = 54.25
2nd Stage
At the end of the term, all students who have completed the tracks are eligible to take the GATEWAY exam.
The average of the final exam score is taken as 30%.
Example:
exam | The student’s grade (example) | 30% average |
---|---|---|
GATEWAY | 60 | 18 |
3rd Stage
The total points earned at the end of the racks are added to the GATEWAY exam scores. Students who achieve a total of 65 points or above are considered successful and earn the right to advance to the department.
Example:
Average Track End Total Score (%70) | Averaged GATEWAY exam score (30%) | TOTAL SCORE |
---|---|---|
54.25 | 18 | 72.25 Successful |
Appealing Exams
An appeal against the result of an exam may be submitted in writing by the student themselves to the English Preparatory School administration within two business days of the announcement date, using a form to be completed in the system. The exam result subject to appeal will be re-examined by the course instructor and members of the Assessment and Evaluation Unit within two business days of the date the matter is reported.
Attendance & Absence Status
Students must attend at least 80% of classes. This also applies to the Summer School. Students who fail to attend classes will not have their grades included in the average and will be considered unsuccessful and cannot claim any rights. Illness and any other important excuses fall within the 20% allowance. MEDICAL REPORTS are not accepted as excuses for absence. Students are responsible for tracking their attendance status in the UBIS system.
Principles of Discipline
Students must bring their course materials to class, complete their assignments and projects on time, and submit them. Students who arrive late to class will be admitted but marked absent.
Only English is spoken in class. No food or drinks, except water, are allowed in the classroom.
Any behavior that disrupts the course will be dealt with in accordance with the relevant articles of the Higher Education Institutions Student Discipline Regulations.
Students who cheat, attempt to cheat, or provide answers to others on any exam during the academic year will have their exam canceled and invalidated, and disciplinary action will be taken against them.
If it is determined that the assignments and projects submitted contain plagiarism, theft, copying all or part of the content from the internet, or the use of translation engines or artificial intelligence, the assignment will be deemed invalid and will receive a grade of zero (0).
Consulting System
Each student is assigned to a class based on the results of their English Placement Test, and each class has an assigned academic advisor. Advisors, who change each term, are responsible for monitoring the academic progress and attendance of the students in their assigned class and taking necessary measures. Students can discuss any academic matter with their academic advisor. Advisors can contact students’ families if necessary. You can find the advisors’ office hours on the schedules posted on their office doors.
